Ignition System Repair

Ignition Repair

When we talk about the ignition, there are two main parts to worry about.

Ignition Switch: This is the part of the ignition where the key is placed and turned in order to start a car.

Electronic Ignition: This consists of the electronic components that help to power the starter.

Depending on the vehicle type, the ignition may be comprised of a single unit or separate.

Ignition Lock Cylinder Replacement

This is the part where the key actually gets inserted into.

There are some common symptoms for a bad ignition lock cylinder:

  • The vehicle will not turn on – usually caused by a worn cylinder after much use
  • Problems inserting or removing the key – this is the most common reason why we service and repair this part.
  • Ignition switch is hot to the touch
  • Engine will not crank when turning the key – sometimes the engine will crank, but the vehicle won’t start
  • The engine will randomly shut off during travel

Spark Plug Replacement

These little parts are responsible for a very important role in your vehicle’s engine – ignition within the engine cylinders that cause the engine to start. Spark plugs, like many other components in a car, will begin to wear and fail over time. Spark plug replacement is a fairly straight-forward process.

Our Process:

  • Perform inspection – visual and vehicle codes
  • Remove and replace spark plugs
  • Perform inspection of threads in engine head and decide whether compression testing is required
  • Perform inspection of ignition wires
  • Install new spark plugs
  • Test the vehicle to ensure correct functions

Symptoms of bad spark plugs:

  • Engine misfire
  • Check Engine light
  • Vibrations under the hood that are different from normal
  • Engine idles in a rough manner
  • Fuel consumption is increased
  • Acceleration is not as quick as it used to be
  • Car may be difficult to start  in the morning

Ignition Cable Replacement

Whenever spark plugs are replaced, you should also check your ignition cables. These wires transfer the spark from the ignition coil to the spark plugs. They are a common point of failure. Many of the same symptoms of bad spark plugs are the same for ignition cables.

Whenever you have bad ignition cables, it is important to check the surrounding components for defects, because many times the ignition cable failure is a result of other parts of the ignition system going bad.

Whenever replacing spark plugs, check the ignition cable, and vice versa.

Our Process:

  • Visual inspection and vehicle code scan
  • Check each individual cable using special testing tools
  • Remove bad cables
  • Replace the cables with new ones
  • Perform inspection of spark plugs
  • Clear codes and conduct a test of the vehicle to ensure everything is in working order.

Ignition Coil Replacement:

The ignition coil is responsible for generating the spark that is required for the initial ignition of the fuel within the engine. Without this part, a car would not be able to start nor run smoothly. Similar to other parts of the ignition system, problems here will not necessarily cause the car to not start, but will lead to problems within the engine such as misfires.

It is important to take into consideration the fact that this part can cause other parts of the ignition system to go bad such as the spark plugs and ignition wires. Because of this, we always perform inspection of other parts of the ignition system if we notice that one part has failed.

Sometimes the ignition coil is damaged by fluids that leak onto the coils. It is always important to have a certified German mechanic inspect your vehicle so that you can be assured that all of the problems will be correctly diagnosed and repaired.

Symptoms of a failing/bad ignition coil:

  • Check Engine light is illumintaed
  • Engine misfires or rough running of the engine
  • Vehicle won’t start
