Battery Replacement & Maintenance

Battery replacements are one of the most common jobs we do at Malone’s. The battery is an essential part of your car. From powering the starter, the ignition and fuel systems, and almost all other electronics within your vehicle, you can be sure that this is one component that cannot fail.

Because it is such a critical component, regular battery maintenance is a must. Malone’s provides battery inspection as a part of all our diagnostic and maintenance services.

Battery Diagnostic Services

We mostly get people coming into our shop during the summer or winter months for battery check-ups. Whether you have left the car sitting around in the garage, or are planning to go on a long road trip, it is essential to check your battery for faults.

During our diagnostic services, we typically:

  • Inspect the battery
  • Inspect terminals
  • Check the charging system
  • Check the amount of charge left in the battery

Battery Terminals

If we find that your battery is dying or dead, then we will recommend a battery replacement. We follow strict manufacturer guidelines when determining when a battery should be replaced. Luxury European models need special care when it comes to the battery. These vehicles many times have much more electrical components that are reliant on the battery than most cars.

We test all new battery installations. We check that the charging system and battery for any issues.

Battery Cable Replacement

Battery cable ends are responsible for connecting the battery cables to the terminal posts. During our inspection, we will make sure there are no tears or other problems with the cables. If their condition is in bad shape, we will always recommend replacement.

Warning signs of a dying car battery

If you notice that your car is taking longer to crank

When you try to start your car, does the cranking take longer or feel sluggish?

Check Engine Light

You should have a mechanic or your local auto parts shop check the codes to see if the light is related to a battery with low power

Low Battery Fluid level

If you take a closer look at your car’s battery, often times you will see that there is a layer that is transparent. If you notice that the fluid has lowered to a level below the lead plates, then you can have the battery charging system inspected.

The case of the battery seems swollen or is cracked in multiple places

Heat and other issues can cause the battery to bloat up. This can either just lead to the battery having less power, or could be indicative of a bigger issue. You should get your battery inspected as soon as possible.

There is gunk/weird residue around the battery

If you see off-white material around the battery, then you should have the battery inspected as it will most likely need to be replaced. Often times, if there is corrosion around the posts (the positive and negative connections), then these can simply be cleaned.

Old age

If you notice issues above and also have not had your battery inspected or replaced in several years, then it is most likely time for a replacement. You should check your owner’s manual or manufacturer guidelines for more information. Typically, we recommend to have your battery inspected every year.

Factors That Reduce Battery Life

Heat

The extreme temperatures that can be experienced during the summer months is the primary reason for why we conduct so many battery replacements. Heat will have the biggest impact on your battery life.

Short Travel Distances

Your car’s battery will recharge as you drive. If you drive short distances constantly (around 10 minute travel times), then you will impact the overall battery life.

Negligence

If you leave your light on or a power adapter plugged into a device, then this can cause your battery to quickly drain overnight.
